About CBD

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a cannabinoid. It is generally extracted from hemp plant strains that have very little THC but lots of CBD.

  • Full-spectrum extracts contain 0.3% or less THC (by dry weight (and by law));
  • THC can be removed from full-spectrum extracts – these are then called broad-spectrum extracts.
  • CBD can also be extracted by way of complete isolation, called CBD isolate.

 

Does the minuscule amount of 0.3% or less THC make dogs “high”? We researched this topic and found that this little THC has no such psychoactive effect. Of course, there may be other reasons why consumers may want to choose THC-free CBD oils.

Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum extracts contain other naturally occurring cannabinoids and so-called terpenes. The full availability of these components is found to be beneficial (“entourage effect”).

Different (full or broad spectrum) hemp extracts are highly concentrated as such and they can contain different amounts of CBD per unit. Most CBD oil products are mixed with carrier oils, mostly hemp seed oil and/or MCT oils such as palm or coconut oil; these oils are declared inactive ingredients.

Dosing as such is no rocket science and dosing guides are usually provided. Some companies offer a variety of different strengths/concentrations to facilitate easy dosing.

CBD extract is expensive, so the more CBD a bottle contains, the more expensive it is.

The confusion about tinctures

We do not know why some reviewers and a few companies call their CBD Oil “tinctures”. The word “tincture” actually describes plant extracts dissolved in ethanol (or sometimes also in vinegar or glycerol.) Rest assured, to our knowledge there no CBD Oils that contain ethanol (etc.). Even if they are called “tinctures”, they all contain oil, as full hemp extract oil and hemp seed oil and/or MCT oil.

 

The story about “human grade”

Some companies promote their CBD ingredients as “human grade”. Honestly, we would expect all extracts to be “human grade quality” for two reasons: Firstly, from a scientific point of view, how would a CBD hemp extract made for human differ from ones made for pets? And secondly, it makes no economics sense to manufacture two different extracts.
